The History of Little Cakes ...
Little Cakes started in the late spring of 2003 with a letter sent off to artists around the world asking them to participate in an experiment. Little Cakes Hanna & Justin asked them to consign their hand made wares to us and we would sell them on the internet as well as show them gypsy caravan style wherever/whenever we could. Our goal was to broaden each artists' audience via cross-pollination of interests; handicrafts, music, fashion, and art. Our bright and crazy aesthetic became known as "fine freakery". American farm country kids found high fashion from Holland and Noise nerds in England found pretty trinkets for their girlfriends.
Little Cakes Little Gallery started in the late summer of 2003 in Hanna's apartment in the East Village. It was to feature art in an artist friendly, intimate environment and focus on unknowns who we thought should be shooting stars. Walls were specially painted different colors for each show, guests were given free issues of Paper Rodeo, and fed baked goods and tea. Conversation, opinions, and debate, were encouraged. Little Cakes wanted to break the barriers between what is concidered high and low art and push for art as all aspects of daily life.
Little Cakes is now run solely by Hanna. We no longer sell merchandise through the website due to time and space constraints. You can buy many items from our family of friends by checking our links page. The apartment gallery is on hiatus till further notice since David and I need space for our own art making. Little Cakes is currently a curatorial project that will be focusing on larger, more detailed projects and installations and may occasionally throw in a music related event every now and then. Little Cakes the website will feature pictures and news from LC exhibitions and events as well as Hanna and David's personal work and life.
