Growing Sounds
by David Aron and Hanna Fushihara

There are signs of a narrative but not an obvious one.
From what we've imagined while making the different parts it has gone back and forth between a Japanese garden to an underwater scene at the bottom of the ocean. It is probably somewhere magically in between.
We are creating a quiet sitting room for contemplation and rejuvenation and have been focusing on realizing this by keeping the elements natural, unpretentious, and repetitive.
The gallery will be dimly lit and have a square sandbox in the center. Surrounding it are eight large patch worked cushions on the floor. Standing inside the sandbox are wooden rods of varying widths, painted with black and white stripes of different thicknesses. Each rod has a different stripe pattern, a different tone of its own and can represent vibrations of the mind or just simply air bubbles surfacing. They can mean anything really but they definitely have movement and differing speeds depending on the pattern painted on them. On top of the sand in the sandbox are small organic shaped illuminated paper lanterns. They may be glowing rocks bursting through the mantle in the depths of the sea or represent a good idea (light bulb) or a warm heart.
We would like people to sit and watch a slow moving scene as if they are watching an aquarium. We want people to study the setting while also looking inward to see what is reflected.
